As we gather around the table to give thanks this November, it’s time to remember the certifications available to small businesses. Just as Thanksgiving is a time to reflect and be grateful, we can explore the feast of certifications available. There is no better time than the present to get certified!
The State of MD has several certifications. Please see overview of a few below.
MD certifications include the following:
- Minority Business Enterprise (MBE)
- Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE)
- Airport Concessions Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (ACDBE)
- Small Business Enterprise (SBE)
Maryland’s Small Business Reserve (SBR) Program
Maryland’s SBR Program is like the cranberry sauce, adding that extra burst of flavor to your entrepreneurial journey. Established in 2004, it provides a marketplace where small businesses compete against peers. Getting certified is as quick as pie, with same-day certification available through eMaryland Marketplace Advantage (eMMA). Over 20% of all open solicitations are designated for SBR certified vendors, providing access to $430 million in state-funded contracts.
Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) Program Initiated in 1978, it ensures socially and economically disadvantaged small business owners have a seat at the feast. Working with the Governor’s Office of Small, Minority & Women Business Affairs, Maryland’s MBE Program is like the sweet potato casserole of certifications – a blend of collaboration and opportunity.
While you are preparing your turkey or mashing your potatoes, dont forget about federal small business certification programs. These programs are administered by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Here is an overview of a few below.
Small Disadvantaged Businesses can self-certify on SAM.gov. SBA certification programs include the Women Owned Small Business (WOSB), Hub-Zone, and 8(a) certification programs. In addition, for veterans there is the Veteran-Owned Small Business (VOSB) or the Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB). Both certifications fall under the SBA’s Vet-Cert program.
So while you are giving thanks over a meal, you can also take time on Thanksgiving to review these certs that might prove helpful in your business endeavors.
Have a safe and happy Turkey Day!
